BOoty call (it ain't me)

The date on this demo recording was November 25th 2014. That blows my mind! It is so hard for me to listen to this because I can hear how inexperienced my voice is. I don't have a lot of control and I push my voice in a weird way. I was just starting out as a singer and was very insecure about my voice too. I thought that singers were just naturally gifted, you either had it or you didn't, and I didn't... I didn't realise that it was something I could work on and improve. This is the recording made in my boyfriends dad's studio, in the house we lived in, in Bournemouth, UK. My boyfriend at the time was a rocker and he did his best to countrify this for me. I actually love that we kept the opening riff because it holds a lot of memories for me. It's kinda cool also to me that we didn't change the structure too much, or the lyrics. I wanted to update the lyrics, out of pride, because I had written this when I was young and inexperienced but I knew I needed to put my ego aside and leave the song alone.
I can't find any live versions of the song from back in the day, but below is a video from the same era, sitting in the loungeroom, steps away from the studio, covering one of my favourite bands, with my ex, Chris, who helped bring Booty Call to life all those years ago.
We shot the music video at The Selfie Studio in Newcastle. Jeremy from Eyes and Ears Creative worked on most of the videos from the album. This day we shot 4 videos in the selfie studio using the different backgrounds. This was a fun one, I had the idea to have me jump around the screen, Jeremy absolutely nailed this. Here is the behind the scenes from the shoot:

A note from Katie:
This is the oldest song on the record, I wrote it well before I could call myself an artist or even a songwriter. I had just flown to Melbourne for The X Factor (remember that show?), I spent the whole day waiting around for my chance to sing for Ronan Keeting, Mel C, and one other judge, I can't remember who. It was a wild ride, I had been given a song to sing, Wake Up Call, Maroon 5 and absolutely bombed! Mel C said "that's the worst version of that song I've ever heard" I'll never forget those words. Any way, after that show chewed me up and spit me out that day I had to go and sleep at the airport before my flight home the next morning. I remember getting a text from a guy I went to school with while lying there cold and uncomfortable on the airport floor. It was some kind of pick up line and I noticed his profile picture was him with a girl. I got mad and called him out and started writing this song, "don't you think I know that's not your sister in your profile pic"... except it turns out, it was his sister..... Never let the truth get in the way of a good story huh! The song lived in my head for years until I was living in England and my boyfriend at the time, his father has a studio so they both helped me produce the demo version (you can listen to it over on the left). I was VERY excited! My friend Claire paid to put the song on a CD and I proudly handed it out wherever I could. I remember coming home to Australia and going to CMC rocks as a punter and just handing out this CD with "booty call" and my picture on it. Needless to say, that didn't lead to my big break haha
