I DON'T GET MAD, I GET EVEN
(hypothetically)

Track 5.png

A note from Katie:

This one was firmly in the vault for many years until it came rushing back to me as I learnt that one of my ex band members had hocked the guitar I lent him. Literally the line "I'm gonna hock your guitar" came flying in to my brain and while I was crushed to lose the guitar I'd written some of my favourite songs on, I knew getting mad about it wasn't going to get anything done. So I got even, I got a new band and chased my dream down even harder and took this one into the studio. It's wordy and unapologetic and it lights a fire under me every time we play this songs. I think for me, getting even was really just about moving on and being the bigger person, I know that any one who has wronged me in the past can no longer touch me, they no longer have access to me and sometimes removing yourself from their ability to impact you is the best revenge.

The below video is just snippets from the studio recording this one, I look so happy and free so I know letting go was the right answer :)

I was FRESH on the scene when I boldly talked my way into a writing room with Troy Kemp. We wrote 4 songs in one day and it was safe to say I had the bug from then. It's hard for me to listen to my voice in this work tape because I so didn't consider myself as a singer (something I've been working hard on ever since). But the energy in this tape and knowing how the song turned out has me feeling very proud :)

We ended up changing the chorus's slightly when I recorded this song many years later with Jared. Instead of having two different choruses that combined for the last one, it made more sense to keep the main chorus consistent through the whole song and just tack chorus two on at the end almost like a sequel driving the point home!

It's such a fun song and I love playing it live with the band. It's also the song I listen two when I need to remind myself of my worth.
